Over the last decade, mindfulness initiatives have demonstrated progressive influence on employee health, productivity and organizational effectiveness. The American Psychological Association reports these practices can:
• Reduce stress
• Improve cognitive flexibility
• Enhance memory and focus.
Successful leaders need to evidence a high degree of self-awareness and stress tolerance. We want our leaders to be able to manage adverse situations and unfavorable circumstances. Mindfulness for leaders can be thought of as “brain practice.” Studies have shown that regular mindfulness practices can improve cognitive ability, allow leaders to better reflect on their thoughts and behaviors (the basis for emotional intelligence, or EQ), and improves mental and physical health. When a leader is able to perform with greater discipline and focus, employees and the organization benefits. These leadership behaviors demonstrate to followers that challenges are being addressed and are being managed.
Practicing mindfulness is not only for the workplace, but a practice to enhance all aspects of our existence. Too many leaders disregard the imbalances between home and work which regularly leads to reduced job satisfaction and can harm relationships outside of work. Being mindful is about being aware of ourselves, being fully engaged in our work and our relationships, being purposeful and acting intentionally.
